Obviously there is a cost
element in being a part of The Potato Room Players - and the cost
is in time and effort as well as hard cash. But the rewards are unsurpassed.
COST IN TERMS OF MONEY
The ‘show fee’ - rather like a membership – is £25.00.
This is paid at the first rehearsal. You are then covered by our
insurance for the time you are with us.
If you wish to borrow a script (a ‘libretto’) or a music
book (a ‘score’) then there is a RETURNABLE charge made
(about £10). You get this back in full when you return the
book. They are very expensive, so that’s why we require this
deposit. If you write a cheque, we do not cash it.
COST IN TERMS OF TIME
The rehearsal period is usually about 3 months. During that time
you will spend time learning the necessary musical numbers you
are involved with, the choreography of those numbers and any dialogue
and moves that the scenes need. The show will then be put together
bit by bit. This takes time – but as this is something you
want to do – and will enjoy enormously – does it matter?
The early rehearsals will be once or twice a week. As time goes
on, you may be called to additional rehearsals, and as the show
gets closer, there will be extra rehearsals, together with Sundays.
You will never be called on a Saturday! In the 2 to 3 weeks before
a show you may be called about 4 nights a week. It’s essential
that rehearsals are not missed or we may recast your scenes. Sometimes
we have asked someone to withdraw from a show, whose attendance
was poor, as this affects everyone else.
COST IN TERMS OF EFFORT
We would like you to practice songs and dances when you are away
from rehearsals, so that we are not backtracking. Similarly, lines
must be learnt early on so that you do not need your book. Only
then can we develop a character. We are also very keen that each
Company member sells as many tickets as possible (a minimum figure
of 25-30) through our internal booking system. This will involve
you in talking to friends, family, workmates and even strangers
on a bus – to raise awareness of the show. We’d like
you to distribute the provided leaflets and posters where they
will have most impact.
You are a member of a fabulous Company – and have a wonderful
Show to sell!
Well? What’s in it for ME?!
You want to enjoy your leisure time – it’s valuable – and
it is the aim of every administrative member of PRP to ensure that
your time with us is thoroughly enjoyable.
THE COMPANY
If you are a member of PRP, you are a member of one of the best – if
not the best – theatrical companies in West Yorkshire. We are
a relatively new Company - having been formed in the late 1980’s
and are not a ‘society’. We were formed by the Leeds
City Varieties Management to support their fabulous Victorian Music
Hall. The theatre is well known world-wide and almost everyone you
see on TV has worked there at some time. Our ‘remit’ is
to produce shows of the highest possible professional standard using
invited artistes. We rarely hold auditions but if someone with talent
approaches us, we will always try and see them.
REHEARSALS
It is here that you will spend most of your time. We will teach you
the music and choreography relevant to your part in the show using
professional Musical Directors and Choreographers. You will find
that the rehearsals are relaxed and good fun. Obviously you must
attend them regularly and punctually, so as to get the most out
of them, and so that everyone is of the same high standard. There
are always people around to help and give support. As time goes
on, you will be working with the Director whose job it is to rehearse
the dialogue scenes, and then to pull all the strands together
into the finished pProduction, ready for the audience on first night!
THE SHOW
Being a part of a PRP show in a professional theatre is a wonderful
experience. Our members enjoy the highest quality support from
all the various departments that make up a PRP production. The
costumes will ensure you look great, wigs if necessary will add
to your character, and makeup artistes will be on hand to add that
final touch.
As you step on stage, you will be confident knowing that a professional
orchestra is there for you. An efficient Stage Director and the Crew
will ensure that the set is in place – and lit by our resident
Lighting Designer. If required, your personal radio microphone will
be controlled by our Sound Technician and your dresser will be ready
with your next costume change.
In the interval, tea and coffee will be provided, and after the
show, the Circle Bar will be kept open for you to meet your friends
and family.
There are no ‘stars’ in our Company. You are part of
a team, where everyone is equal and we would be pleased to make you
welcome.
