SYNOPSIS: Sweet Charity
As the story begins, Charity Hope Valentine has come to the park to meet her future fiancé ~ if he first gets a divorce. She has spent the day lost in her dreams of romantic conversation with him while looking round furniture stores. In her hands she clutches her life’s savings, brought as a deposit on their new home. While looking down into the lake Charity suggests that they throw something into the lake for luck. The young man complies in a most unexpected way and throws her into the lake while running off with her money.
Next day at the Fandango Ballroom where Charity has worked for several years, she has to admit to her fellow hostesses that yet again she’s been taken for a ride.
On the way home Charity happens to pass the upmarket Pompeii Club just as the screen idol Vittorio Vidal tumbles onto the pavement and collides with her. A huge fall-out with his girl friend leads to yet another liaison for Charity though we know already that it will not have the happy ending she desperately craves.
Charity’s friends reprimand her for not making the most of the relationship that could have helped her escape from a life at the Fandango Ballroom. Undaunted, she embarks on a new adventure determined to meet new and interesting people and where else would one go but the local ‘Y’.
Here at the ‘Y’ our heroine meets Oscar, a very uptight, tax accountant when they are both trapped in the lift. The experience brings the unlikely pair together and an affair quickly develops with Charity head over heels yet again. After a visit to the Rhythm of Life Church they go on a date to Coney Island. There they get stuck on top of the ferris wheel. Charity tries to admit to Oscar about her job at the ballroom, but her fear of heights causes her to be side-tracked.
Oscar finds out about the job she has done for the last few years but he loves Charity and does not mind. A wedding is planned and a farewell party organised by the hostesses at the ballroom. Everything looks fine, a fairytale ending looms but Oscar chickens out and Charity is left desolate once again!
